Introduction I have been involved in national politics for about five decades; active with a number of NGO’s on human rights, peasant and worker issues: founder member of SUARAM and JSPB (for slums and housing – Vice Chair for a number of years); prepared reports and papers for UNU and UNESCO;carried out evaluations and wrote reports on labour and women movements.Active in student activities while studying in the University: President of the UM Malay Language Society, Secretary-general of GPMS (Federation of Malay Students Unions), Secretary-general of UMSU-GPMS-NUSU(Nanyang University Student Union) Joint Committee. I served as an expert on various occasions for UNESCO,ECAFE and UNU. Served as member of International Mission to Investigate Massacre in Bangkok, 1992; Panel of Judges for Permanent People’s Tribunal on Industrial and Environmental Hazards (Bhopal and Bombay), 1992; International Inquiry on Displaced People in Sri Lanka, 1994. I was detained without trial under the Internal Security Act for six years (1974-80)and adopted by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience.
