IntroductionGreetings from beautiful rural Idaho. I am Kelly Pesnell, a family nurse practitioner, Idaho State University nursing professor, and doctor in nursing practice student at the University of Alabama (thanks to the power of the internet). I’m also a mother of three school age children, a small town swim coach, and avid distance swimmer, cyclist, and skier. I’m well aware of the challenges presented in our busy lives to consistently promote great nutrition and physical activity for our children. I’m also aware that primary care providers face multiple barriers to providing adequate health promotion education on an individual basis in the clinical setting. By developing and implementing an affordable and easily accessible program in a rural community, I hope to provide parents and children with the skills and resources they need to promote their health and prevent childhood obesity. I also hope that the teamwork, expertise, and energy provided by the project team, Idaho State University School of Nursing, and the Parma School District will become a permanent partnership, providing nutrition and physical activity education and support that can expand to other rural communities.
