Introduction Research shows that children get ready to read years before they start school. Funded through a grant from the C. D. Spangler Foundation, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library's Jump Start Reading at Home outreach program focuses on six specific building blocks of early literacy - skills that children can start learning from birth.

The program provides workshops for parents to inform and assist them in their critical role as their child's first teacher, as well as skill-themed storytimes for children that are designed to be fun and help give youngsters an early start to a lifetime of literacy.
