Introduction I began working in clay in 2005 and have found it to be a wonderful creative medium. Many people have helped and advised me along the way – potters are an amazing community of helpful guides, advisors and friends. The appeal of ceramics to me is primal. I joke about it being a means for me to return to childhood and play with mud and fire, but there is much truth within the joking. The many-staged work of creating a pot calls on all of the ancient four elements of nature: earth, water, fire and air. And, whether it is the primitive act of shaping mud into an interesting form or the frightening and wonderful act of reaching into a fire hot enough to melt the very rocks of the earth and to snatch that glowing form from the flame, the work of making pottery is appealing and satisfying on very deep levels of my soul. For me, making pottery is about creating works of beauty. If others find in those pots the beauty I sought to create, that is a marvelous reward.
