| Introduction | Born 1972, Ruiz studied Visual Arts at Melbourne University under artists David Thomas, Claire Day, John Neeson and Godwin Bradbeer. Engaged in commercial projects since 1997, over recent years Ruiz has returned again to developing his focus on figurative painting working from his studio in Kensington, Melbourne. His art draws inspiration from Western figurative traditions, from Goya, El Greco, Degas, Modigliani to many painters post 1940 including Auerbach, R.B. Kitaj, Bacon, Giacometti, Freud, De Kooning and Klee. Ruiz achieved a near sell-out show in 2005 (red gallery, Melbourne), and is working towards his next exhibition, details TBA.Artist Statement: These drawings and paintings explore my understanding of 'ausencia humana'; interpreting human form in the ‘absence’ of the human subject. To explore ausencia is to find a place where human story, memory and imagination merge and often collide with physical reality. Painting is a way of mapping out what is remembered, known, and felt about being close to another human being. |
