| Introduction | My name is Jack Collier. I used to think that I could do anything I wanted to do and get away with it. I was wrong. I walked out on a good career in International Banking in New York and the City of London and straight into an alcohol rehabilitation clinic. I wasn't an ideal patient. The affair with Elaine while I was in rehab wasn't staying with the program, and Alice, the trainee counselor, was just a mistake. During my eighty-four days in rehab I met some interesting people. Regrettably I stayed in touch with one of them when I left twelve-step programs and took myself back to my Northern roots, where things had changed in the fifteen years I'd been away. The dirty harbors had all sprouted marinas filled with yachts and expensive apartments. Outside the marina bars and restaurants were the hot-hatchbacks, Chelsea Tractors and sports cars of short skirted, tall heeled, high maintenance escorts, mistresses and yummy mummies. I found myself a waterside garret, a boat, an insane sports car, and settled down to quietly rebuild my life. As it turned out I needn't have bothered with any of it because you can go back, but you can never go home again. |
