Introduction Barbara Brooks is a writer and a highly regarded teacher of writing. She has published fiction and nonfiction; her short stores and essays have been published in the UK, US, Europe, Asia as well as in Australia. Her first book, Leaving Queensland, was short memoir essays and stories. Eleanor Dark: a Writer's Life was described as 'something special in literary biography'. She has taught creative writing at the University of Technology Sydney for over ten years. Her other teaching experience includes Life Writing Masterclasses for the Writing in the Tropics program at James Cook University, short courses at the Centre for Continuing Education at Sydney University and the NSW Writers' Centre, and Research for Writers courses at the State Library of NSW. She has received fellowships from the Literature Board of the Australia Council, Varuna the Writers' House, Bundanon, Watermark, and an Asialink Literary Fellowship which took her to India. Her DCA thesis, Verandahs, which combines memoir and fiction, won the UTS Chancellor's Award.
