| Introduction | I am an inmate of the prison formerly known as the United Kingdom. The gates are still open (for now) but there is one CCTV camera for every 12 citizens, a biometric database without proper safeguards or accountability is being built up, "fixed penalties" are replacing proper trials for low-level crimes, emails and phone calls are routinely logged, number plate recognition is in place, compulsory ID cards are on the way and in every aspect of their lives, the entire population is under surveillance. All is justified under the official State Mantra: "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear." Meanwhile the politicians have exempted themselves from scrutiny under the Freedom of Information Act. |
