Introduction | HONESTY: Tell the truth. Keep your word. Be honest first with yourself, then with others. The alternative, "better living through rationalization," helps you cut corners. It will also sever lifelines and cut your soul to the quick. SELF-CONTROL: If you don't have a craving, moderation is not a virtue. What is virtuous is to stop a craving when the craving starts taking you. Quit doing anything to excess and no one will benefit more than your loved ones. KINDNESS: Love doesn't make the world go round; kindness does. When you're kind to a taxi driver or check-out person, you expect nothing in return. If you make kindness a habit, others may find it contagious. ENTHUSIASM: Literally "having God within you," enthusiasm takes guts, because ripping up the dance floor, singing in the rain, or raising a glass to life will no doubt offend your more cynical associates. It is worth the sacrifice. HUMILITY: Pride is no sin when it brings us together, and modesty is no virtue when it sets us apart. Yet real humility can't be beat. AWE: Life is not stranger than we imagined, it's stranger than can be imagined. Don't let a day go by without letting it blow your socks off. |
