| Introduction | I’m retired. Spend a lot of time angry because I didn’t take writing seriously enough when I was younger. Two marriages, seven children, work work work poverty poverty poverty may have had something to do with it. I always thought, though, I’d have plenty of time when I retired. I don’t. Nor have I the fierce burning energy of a new star, which is what you need. Just the steady, weaker energy, of a mature, wiser one. I no longer have feverish inspired bursts of scribbling. I edit myself too much. It is hard work. As Hemingway said: "There is no rule on how to write. Sometimes it comes easily and perfectly; sometimes it’s like drilling rock and blasting it out with charges." I’m happy when I have written. |
