IntroductionThe Great Divide, an acoustic trio based in Delaware Co., Indiana, is John Hoyt (banjo and vocals), Ron Beach (guitar and vocals), and Ric Dwenger (bass guitar and vocals). The band has been making music together for 30 years. The Great Divide's music is hard to pigeon-hole and has been called "newgrass" and "contemporary string music," but such terms don't really describe their sound. Their approach explores American music beyond the acoustic boundaries of folk and bluegrass. By using the traditional instruments of bluegrass and intricate three-part vocal harmonies, they've developed a distinctive sound that blends rock, jazz, bluegrass, country, swing, folk, old time, and gospel. For more than ten years, the Great Divide was a favorite band of the Indiana State Park's summer artists program. They have opened for such nationally-known artists as the Smothers Brothers, Leon Russell, Atlanta, Anson Funderberg and the Rockets, and blues singer Sam Myers. They have also performed live on Minnesota Public Radio's "A Prairie Home Companion" with Garrison Keillor.
