| Introduction | I'm a retired sales manager who worked for the Italian company Pirelli, in the tyre division, for twenty four years. After National Service in the Royal Air Force I joined Morris Motors then part of the British Motor Corporation ( now defunct), and then Carnation Foods who have since been swallowed up by their greatest rival Nestle. Then came Pirelli. Retired at 57. I started painting in watercolour four years after retirement, rather late in the day, and have been plugging away ever since. Previously my main interest was in a specialist gardening area, Auriculas and Primroses - members of the extensive Primula family - and I've written three books and numerous articles, as well as lecturing in the UK, USA and Canada, but painting now takes centre stage. Among my favourite artists are Charles Reid, Judi Whitton, John Yardley, Trevor Chamberlain, Skip Lawrence, David Taylor, Robert Wade, John Palmer, Aubrey Phillips, Piet Lap, Viktoria and Slawa Prischedko, Lin Fealing, Cao Bei An, Bev Jozwiak, Gerard Hendriks, Stan Miller, and from the older era Edward Seago, Edward Wesson, Hercules Brabazon, John Blockley, John Singer Sargeant. There are many others I like. |
| Interests | Watercolour Painting, I'm a member of Avon Valley Artists and also Bathampton Art Group, Military History, especially WW2, the American West mainly the 1800's, Wildlife especially birds and wildfowl, current affairs, politics, Newcastle United football club, my grandchildren. |
| Favorite Movies | Lots, the John Ford western trilogy, Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande. The Searchers and several other great westerns. Also like most of Clint Eastwood's films, Bullit with Steve McQueen and many others. |
| Favorite Music | Rock and Roll and Motown. I'm stuck in the past! |
| Favorite Books | Non fiction probably Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. John Wyndham `The Day of the Triffids, The Kraken Wakes etc, the 87th Precinct detective novels by Evan Hunter (writing as Ed McBain), several others like William McGivern. I was a fan of the tough American detective novel. I say was because I mostly read non-fiction these days. These are just examples. There are many more as I have read hundreds, possibly thousands of books and possess several hundred, mainly WW2 in all it's aspects, campaigns, politics, equipment. The conflict between the American indian and the US Army/settlers etc during the 1800's, gardening, and a small number covering other periods like the First World War, the Romans, and the Spanish conquest of Mexico. |
