| Introduction | I'm a scientist and good at statistics, but I make my living reading highly technical material and then writing and commenting on it for the people who use that science to make the world safer for breathing in. I like the natural world, the wet side more than the tree and mountain side, and need regular doses to stay sane. |
| Interests | Playing outside, commuter cycling, kayaking local waterways, body surfing, live music when I can get it, obscure history, and beer. I like to see the world, but I also like to see the local world at the pace of human movement - by foot, by bike, or by kayak. |
| Favorite movies | I tend to like obscure and not so obscure unrated stuff with subtitles - the more raw and realistically human in form and behavior, the better. I also enjoy 3-D IMAX eyecandy like Speedracer. Otherwise, I'm not much of a movie person. |
| Favorite music | Garage and surf rock, and most music that derives from those but is more contemporary in lyric and quality. My boys sometimes accuse me of enjoying badly recorded noise. |
| Favorite books | Guns, Germs, and Steel; Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series; Anything Douglas Coupland or Malcolm Gladwell. |
