| Introduction | I create stained glass pieces, from suncatchers to large panels, using the copper foil method. Each step is done by hand, from choosing glass and cutting, to polishing and framing. This is done entirely in New Zealand, locally at my studio in Brooklands. I combine a huge variety of colours, textures, and types of glass to craft animals, geometric shapes, landscapes, symbols, holiday pieces, and others. At times, I also incorporate crystals, glass gems, fused and lampwork glass, mineral samples, etc. into my work, and sometimes frame them with rimu frames custom made by my partner to fit each particular piece. Making stained glass is profoundly meaningful to me--the process of learning the craft helped me to recover following a lengthy hospitalisation, and became my primary focus. As a former classically trained musician forced to stop playing by injury, I saw work as a stained glass artist as an imperative creative outlet that had long been denied to me. It remains so for me to this day, every day, and I put a piece of myself into every piece I create. |
