Introduction | I have two Colostomy support groups I run in NJ. Both started because of inadequate information supplied patients at hospitals. I was shown a short video on how to change my appliance - Nothing More! After leaving the hospital I searched for Colostomy support groups in my town, found none! Looked to my county and still found none. One day at a regularly scheduled checkup (I had colorectal cancer) I voiced my disbelief to the doctor about no support in our area. He, jokingly, said "Why not start one?" On my way home I thought about this. I did several years of internet research on ostomies; wrote all the major ostomy supply manufacturers and wrote a booklet for fellow o ostomates. "The Ostomates Owners Manual" I had several doctors read it, to point out any mistakes. It went over very well. After writing the booklet I had enough confidence to venture out and start a support group. We recently started a second support group. So, Get Involved . . . . . Nothing Is Impossible! If you would like a copy of the booklet drop me a line at: ostomyvisitor@aol.com with Ostomy Tips in the subject field. |
