If mud is dirt plus water, what is clay?
Clay is actually not a single type of soil, but it is used to describe a group of hydrous aluminium phyllosilicate minerals that stick together to form clay. But, if you don't want a scientific answer, I'd say icky stuff that gets under your nails.
