Why is the title of this blog 'Scarce Whales'? The title is a reference to the first line of the book 'Oil 101'. Also, one of the many possible titles for Oil 101 was 'Scarce Whales and Dark Nights', harking back to the the reason the modern oil industry sprang up: a lack of inexpensive whales and a need for cheap lighting.
