Introduction | Chester C. Owens, Jr. is a native of Ashdown, Arkansas, and a 1949 graduate of Sumner High School, Kansas City, KS. He completed his degree in Business Administration from Pittsburg State University and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Owens’ professional experience includes working as an insurance underwriter for property and casualty for the H.W. Sewing and Co., Inc., and later becoming president of the organization. An active member of the Civil Rights Movement in Kansas City, KS, Owens was elected to the Kansas City, KS, City Council in 1983, the first African American elected to City Government in the 20th century. He is an active historian on many subjects, with an emphasis on African American history in Kansas City, KS. Owens has been married to Lillie Anne Yates-Owens for 57 years. He has three Daughters- Cynthia M. Harris, Ph.D., DABT, Karen L. Owens and Carla A. Owens. He has two grandsons – Larry D. Jones II and Kaleb C. Jones. |
