| Introduction | Born in the Philippines, I moved to the United States when I was 6 ½ years old. Because I entered kindergarten towards the end of the school year and I didn’t know any English, teachers believed that it would be best if I stayed back an extra year to attain a more solid foundation. In my sophomore year, I decided on an early graduation. In the middle of my junior/ senior year, I realized that my goal in graduating early wasn’t just to finish high school; my goal was, and still is, to better myself and, most of all, to inspire other students. I want my legacy to be an example of how an average girl with a foreign background can set high goals and, through hard work, attain them. I once believed that my aspirations were unrealistic, far-off dreams, never to be achieved by someone like me. But I have discovered, so far, nothing is ever out of reach for someone who tries hard and believes he or she can do better. I graduated in June 2009, a year early from my set graduation date, and I now attend a university in Florida. |
