IntroductionI live in Boulder, Colorado, where I teach for the CU Department of Classics. I completed my graduate work at the University of Washington; the subject of my dissertation was the relationship between the historian Livy and the Augustan regime. After graduate school, I co-founded Seattle Language Academy and directed its program in Classics for more than a decade. Over the past several years, I’ve been working on The Latin Inscriptions of Rome: A Walking Guide. The book, which presents inscriptions from the first century BC to the present day, has three novel features: it includes inscriptions from the whole of the City’s history – ancient, medieval and modern; by ordering them topographically – the way one encounters them while exploring the City on foot – it respects Rome’s famous interpenetration of ancient, medieval and modern; and by presenting them ‘Loeb-style’ – Latin on the left and English translation on the right – it throws open this treasure-house of history, lore and legend to as wide an audience as possible.
