Introduction Jeremy K. Kessler is Associate Professor of Law at Columbia Law School. His forthcoming book, Fortress of Liberty: The Rise and Fall of the Draft and the Remaking of American Law (Harvard) explores how legal and political contests over the military draft transformed the relationship between civil liberties law and the American administrative state. His past scholarship has explored the origins of modern First Amendment law, the transatlantic debate over the relationship between rights and governance during the Second World War, and the history of the human right of conscientious objection. Kessler has also written on law and politics for The New Republic, The Boston Review, n+1, and Jacobin. He is a board member of the American Society for Legal History, and co-convenor of Columbia's 20th Century Politics and Society Workshop.
