| Introduction | I started drawing horses at an early age. I was fortunate that my mother was an artist and art teacher who encouraged my passion. Throughout high school my focus was arts education. During this time I groomed horses at the local stable in exchange for riding lessons. Grooming gave me a tactile feel for the horse’s anatomy; which I apply in my work to this day. My understanding of the horse in motion was acquired by watching horses being ridden in the arena for hours on end. My process for working is simple. I groom my horses onto the page as I draw; sometimes using bold sweeping strokes and sometimes brushing ever so gently. I use light to enhance the form of the horse and gradation of ink or pencil to create volume. I capture the action and emotion of each horse and give them a story to tell. My artistic influences run the gamut from Franz Marc and Leonardo da Vinci through Chinese brush and ancient cave paintings. |
