About me

IntroductionImagine a boy growing up where Comrades and Dissenters do battle like Angels and Demons or Good and Evil. He listens to music that is sanctioned. He looks at no art that is disruptive. 'Take over the government' they said, so he learned law. 'Subdue the enemy' they said; he bought a gun. 'We have the Truth' they swore and the boy listened. But he grew older, straying to the farthest reaches of the Machine until he fell over the edge. He found himself among Dissenters and discovered, to his surprise, that some were good. His senses began to pick up little bits of originality that clung to him like magnets. Now he could see holes in the sails of the Machine, gaping, threatened the progress. He sometimes looked over the railing, into the depth of the water and thought that the Machine wasn't moving at all, or maybe there was even a backwards sway as if the current had owned the Machine at last. In dismay the boy told of what he had seen. Comrades warned him: 'It is the Commandments that make us one. Do not rob us of our collective power.' So the boy became silent, sunk down in thought. Now he stands near the railing, wondering when he must jump from the Machine and is it too late?
