Introduction | Sarah Van Arsdale is the author of Toward Amnesia and Blue, which won the 2002 Peter Taylor Prize for the Novel. Van Arsdale’s eager-awaited third novel, Grand Isle, has just been published by SUNY Press. Grand Isle is the story of shifting relationships among the summer residents of a small island community, after a shocking death at the beginning of the season. The novel has been praised by Christopher Bram as “smart, rich, and grown-up… to be compared to the best work of Richard Russo and Ann Beattie,” and by Alison Bechdel as “not just a lyrical novel… but a truly gripping read.” Van Arsdale’s articles, fiction, and poetry have appeared in numerous publications, including the San Francisco Chronicle, Columbia Review, and Lilith magazine. She has taught at several colleges and universities, most recently at New York University and the City University of New York. Van Arsdale lives in New York City. |
