Introduction | Raised in an Orthodox Jewish community, I was dedicated to my religion for the first 25, or so, years of life, going so far in my religious studies as to achieve rabbinical ordination. But after a long and painful process of challenging my religious beliefs and educating myself on other perspectives, I concluded that my religion--and all religions--were mistaken: They had no responsible basis for claiming to know of a God and His will for our lives. But although I saw religion as misguided, and too sure of its claims, so did I see (strong) atheism as too sure of its claims. We do not know there to be a God, but neither do we know there to be no God. More than a decade down the line, I'm now a professional in one of the helping fields, and I continue to find compelling the pursuit of intellectual honesty--especially on matters relating to ultimate issues: God, religion, and life's meaning. |
