OccupationMedical Doctor, primary care physician
LocationRevere, Massachusetts
IntroductionI have been in medical practice for a few decades now. I graduated medical school in 1981. I have been running my own solo general medical practice in Revere since 1987. I do a general primary care, solely office-based. In the last five or six years I began doing some outpatient narcotic-detoxification, when Suboxone became available for that purpose. This has been a busy part of my practice of late, now comprising probably more than 50% of the practice, although I still see my general patients. Being at the same practice site for 23 years, I have been able to follow some patients for a few decades and that has been interesting and rewarding. I enjoy interacting with patients, and have been intrigued particularly over the years the "family practice" side of things, that is to say seeing my young patients grow into adulthood and start their own families; my middle-age patients grow overly, and, yes, deal with the elderly's dying.
InterestsI have seen the city of Revere change, the demographics, the types of complaints that people bring. I've also noticed different types of demands and manners. There's been a change for many in how to approach the doctor visit, with some having a prearranged agenda for testing and a direction for hoped-for outcome, as there has been expansion of benefit-generating programs (state, federal; including disability, MVA's, WC, legal torts). The level of addiction as well has risen and there is a certain amount of secondary gain visits by subterfuge, with the idea of obtaining narcotics and the like. With all that's having been said, I still find gems and moments of mutual appreciation with my patients, who for the most part are wonderful and gratifying individuals striving, as we all do, for health and knowledge and the help to achieve same.
