Introduction I serve as a pomology advisor for the University of California Cooperative Extension system. As a member of the public sector I serve almond growers by helping them with various issues that arise in the operations of an almond orchard. Notes from my orchard visits will be written up to demonstrate various field diagnostic strategies and skills. Typically, problems that require my assistance are not the "run-of-the-mill" problems. In other words, growers always tell me this: "when we can't figure it out, we call you." It is the hope that this information can be used to help solve problems within the almond industry outside of the area in which I am responsible. I also hope it raises public awareness of the various challenges that face growers when producing food crops. Receiving my M.S. in Plant Pathology, field diagnosis and plant diseases are my expertise. Within my position, I also work within issues of air and water quality, orchard removal and replanting, as well as soil ecology. My current responsibilities within Merced County include over 102,000 acres (41,000 hectares) of almonds, 6,000 acres (2,400 hectares)of walnuts, and 6,000 acres (2400 hectares)of Pistachios.
