About me

Introduction I was born in Bakersfield CA. Shortly after I was born, we moved to Scottsdale AZ where I was grew up. I attended Arizona State University where I majored in piano and trumpet. From ASU, I went to Northwestern University for my masters degree in piano performance. While at Northwestern, I was baptized into the LDS church and when the degree was completed, I served a mission in what is now the New York Rochester Mission. Back then, it was called the Cumorah Mission and covered all of the state except New York City. At the end of my mission, I joined the faculty at BYU where I have been for the past 36 years. I completed a doctorate at the University of Colorado in performance, pedagogy and research. Also during my first year at BYU, I met my wife, Susan. We have five children, four girls and a boy, and 13 grandchildren. Invite me to play golf and I'll be there day or night!
