Introduction Beneath the lighthouse on St. Simons Island, Georgia is a pier that stretches from the beach into Atlantic waters. As a girl, I strolled down that pier with my grandmother.....chatting to folks casting crab baskets over the railings, feeding seagulls and pausing to watch sunsets on worn wooden benches. As I grew older and salt air lulled my emotions to rest, the pier became my favorite place to think. I wondered about life, about relationships, about ideas. I wondered why there was no bridge from the pier to neighboring Jekyll Island, so close yet so far away. I fished for answers to my questions about life as the fishing pier became my wishing pier. Today, as a woman, a wife and a mother, I view the world with more wishes than ever. From unanticipated life experiences, I view the world in a nontraditional way, from a "pier" view instead of a "peer" view. I seek to build bridges between islands....islands of women, islands of men, islands of Americans. It's my honor to welcome YOU to the pier. Thank you for chatting with me as we stroll the promenade or sit on a old wooden bench. Please know I'm eager to hear your views too. Cheers! Carol
