| Introduction | Natural History had me hooked from a young age. Living in a semi-rural university town afforded plenty of entertainment, from the university biology department's collections of snakes, amphibians and owls, to it's very ample and accessible Arboretum. My first adventure was hitching out to Western Canada (most of us Boomers did that,) the enormity of Alberta's mountains was shocking for an Eastern kid. It was hypnotizing actually. The experience was branded into me whilst seeing a fully geared man in Banff getting ready to hit the backcountry. This spurred me to start a Biology degree at University of Calgary, then a Specialization at Concordia University. I logged over a hundred credits in the subject. Plant Field Ecology courses, the whole bit. The die had been cast and I became acutely environmentally aware and I joined Canada Green's and Elizabeth May, who has become somewhat of a heroine. |
