Introduction This blog is inspired by a quote from John McGahern..."Ireland is a peculiar society in the sense that it was a nineteenth century society up to about 1970 and then it almost bypassed the twentieth century." I am a recent arrival in Ireland, having being born in England, spent 30 years in Canada and 7 years in the USA. So, I perhaps have a unique perspective on my new home, and that's what I'll mostly blog about. But of course I'll also use this site for other observations on life, politics, environment, sport, travel, education, basically anything I want. I am the director of an American study abroad program in Dublin, professor, former tenured professor of geology in the US, married to the lovely Catherine, and father of a boy who solely identifies as Irish.
