| Introduction | Megan van Eyk is your average suburban mom with a good husband, two beautiful kids, and a nice home. A plane ride to Hawaii leaves her seated next to Carlos, an attractive older married man. Phone numbers are exchanged and with one phone call, a five year long love affair was born. Memoirs of a Widowed Mistressis is more than a book about the seduction and escape associated with an illicit affair. It’s a personal accout of the ins and outs of mistresshood; about being the other woman and the demands involved in leading two separate lives. It’s also a personal story about growing up with a mentally ill mother and a father whose ever-revolving series of girlfriends and wives served as a model for how van Eyck should be with men. But more than anything, it is a story about love. The dynamics are powerful, messy, and even dangerous, but for van Eyck, ending the affair isn’t an option. Their adulterous love is the truest love she has ever known. But in the end, when Carlos is diagnosed with Amyloidosis, a rare blood disorder, van Eyk is hit with two hard truths: mistresses are always outsiders and sometimes all the love a person has to give isn’t enough to save a life. |
