| Introduction | I was born in Sydney (Australia) in 1936, and now live in Aotearoa/ New Zealand. Since 1970 I have been connected with Massey University as a teacher and scholar in the field of Religious Studies. My ancestor George Colless (1771-1851) may have had a lineage going back to a worthy family in Edinburgh, which included a sister of Robert the Bruce, and a deserter from the army of Bonny Prince Charlie. George was transported (with delight but also with coercion) to New South Wales, for the good of his health; if he had stayed in Birmingham he would have been hanged for theft (he stole 'a woman's gown piece'). The spelling of Colless (not Collis) is unique, and I am the only Brian Edric Colless in existence. (http://www.colless.org/) |
