| Introduction | The American Dream: In Europe, class lines are rigid. Each class has developed a culture of glorifying itself within the social 'order'. Denied a prospect of mobility, the European Worker feels envy and resentment, not ambition looking upward. Americans see class divisions aspirationally. Americans are looking forward and working hard for the day when they move up. In America, within 9 years, 86% of people on the bottom 20% of earners move up, with more people ending on the top 20 % earners than stay at the bottom. The makeup of the bottom 20 percent is changing constantly, as new immigrants come in and find their footing on the lowest rung on the American economic ladder. But almost all are moving up, fast. |
