About me

IntroductionSpinal Muscular Atrophy ia a genetic disease caused by a genetic defect of the SMN1 gene. Spinal Muscular Atrophy is an incurable autosomal recessive disease. Because of the defect of the SMN1 gene; the protein needed for the survival of motor neurons fails to do its part resulting in the death of neuronal cells in the anterior horn of the spinal cord. In result to this there is very little to no muscle tone to the entire body; along with respiratory issues, swallowing issues, and a handful of others. SMA is one of the most common genetic causes of infant death. Because there currently is no cure for SMA (Although they are working on some trial medicines) Treatments consist of managing the systems and preventing complications. This is pretty much just a sum up of the disease..BUT please take the 5 min. out of your day and read these websites below.
