Introduction I am a PhD student in ecology, evolution, and marine biology at UC, Santa Barbara. I study the ecology of Lyme disease and am interested in undertaking practical, public health oriented research that can be applied to prevention and understanding of Lyme and other infectious diseases. I grew up in the Midwest (Minneapolis, MN) where Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases have become much more common over the past few decades. I am fascinated by the relative lack of human cases of Lyme disease in California despite the presence of the tick that transmits it, the bacteria that causes it, and the necessary hosts (like deer and mice) that amplify it. I believe that gaining a better understanding of Lyme disease in California will teach us a lot about the factors that can limit it and how to prevent it.
