About me

Industry Education
Location Corvallis, Oregon
Introduction I was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Pleasant Hill, a small town in the East Bay Area of California. I attended UC Davis where I received a Bachelor's in Plant Science and a Master's degree in International Agricultural Development. In the early 1980s, I lived in East Africa, working first on a refugee resettlement project in Northeastern Uganda, and then with a rural development program in the Rift Valley of Kenya. I also taught agriculture and biology at a boys high school in rural Kenya. In returning to California in 1987, I was hired by UC Davis to help launch a new statewide extension program in sustainable agriculture. Over my 21 years with that program, I worked with groups across the country to provide innovative educational tools and products related to agriculture and the environment. My wife, Sarah, and I relocated to Corvallis, Oregon in 2008. I manage an educational consulting business (DEC Education Services) and completed a Master's in Education from Portland State University in 2014. When not at work, I like to garden, swim, hike, birdwatch, travel, and enjoy all kinds of music.
