Introduction is locally owned by the Markou family. George Markou, owner and chef, was born in New York and moved to Greece when he was 4 years old. He returned to the states in 1984 where we went to Rincon High School and later to Tucson College. It was his dream to one day open a Greek restaurant and share his mom and dad's traditional cooking. George's first restaurant is The Fat Greek on University that opened in 2003. In 2009 he decided to open Greek Taverna where he is able to share a variety of traditional Greek dishes, many of them introduced to Tucson for the first time, like his Spetzofai, or Riganato. George and Traci (his wife) have 3 young boys, and one day he hopes they, too, will get involed with the restaurant after they get some kind of a college degree. Traci Markou, is one busy woman; she takes care of the kids, the Markou ranch, shops for Greek Taverna & The Fat Greek and also runs a small publishing company. Greek Taverna is large enough to accomodate meetings and private parties. Catering is available for pick up or delivery. Call us for more information.
