Introduction pickinjava is a play on words. It points to the condition in Sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere of adults pickin' coffee (java) for long hours in return for paltry pay that they use to feed their children ('pikins' in Central African pidgin). It also could refer to the children that spend their time doing the same thing: pickin' java. Java is a favorite term for coffee used by upscale coffee bar lovers in the West, or at least in the United States. They often have no idea of, and furthermore are trained not to care about, the conditions under which their 'java' was grown and harvested.
