Introduction Bert Hornback is an Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Michigan, where he taught for twenty-eight years,an Emeritus Professor of Humanities at Bellarmine University, and until 2016 Guest Professor at the Universitaet des Saarlandes in Germany. He is a critic, a scholar, an essayist, a letter-writer, and an actor. His most recent books are IN THE WORLD TO BE OF IT, OH TO BE A 'CELLO, and ANEMONES MY FOOTSTOOL. Earlier books include THE WISDOM IN WORDS and THE IDEAL OF TRAGEDY. Hornback has recreated Charles Dickens's famous dramatic readings from "A Christmas Carol" and other favorites more than four hundred times, all over the United States, and in Canada, Ireland, England, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy. For seven of the eight Bush years he lived as an ex-patriate in Amsterdam. He now resides in Saarbruecken. Hornback is the director of the Center for the Advancement of Peripheral Thought. He was one of the three founders of the Neopolitan Catholic Church, and served briefly as an advisor to H. M. the Queen of England. He is a former captain in the U.S. Marine Corps.
