Introduction TAGS: CANCER, FAITH, CATHOLIC BROAD COOKS, BAD CATHOLIC BROAD--I am old enough to have been born at the end of the last World War. I grew up in the 50s in a small New England town, which was safe and comfy but also stifling to someone who read Colette and aspired to being a 19th-century courtesan in Paris. I went to Bates, studied in Oxford for a year, and converted--much to my surprise and dismay--to Christianity while there, listening to Bach's St. John's Passion. I trained as a teacher, then became a writer. I live in a passive-solar house my husband and I designed, 1200 feet up in the hills of W. Mass. I love my life and hope it continues! This was written before I got cancer, diagnosed in October, 2015: had 2 surgeries then months of chemo, lost hair, but now in "Survivorship" and doing well--getting energy back, exercising like crazy, praying, and cooking. You have to set goals for physical fitness when in Recovery, which I am doing: walking up hills with training poles; starting jogging again; and aiming for 10,000 steps a day. IF we're to visit Assissi again, I need to get in shape!
