In addition to a modified design and 10GB of RAM, the limited edition handset includes several software tweaks.
One of these software additions is the in-display fingerprint animation seen below. Fortunately for those who already own a OnePlus 6T, forum members at XDA-Developers found an incredibly easy way to enable the unique animation without the need for root access or sideloading any software.

There are two reasonably straightforward methods to get things working on the T-Mobile and global versions of the OnePlus 6T. The first involves you downloading the Settings Database Editor app from the Play Store. From there, open the app and make sure that “System table” is selected.
Next, locate “op_custom_unlock_animation_style” and select the option to edit the value. Here, you will enter in “3”, confirm the change, and the OnePlus 6T Mclaren Edition’s animation should be working on your phone. Editor's PickOnePlus 6T McLaren Edition hands-on: What should you expect?Over the past few years we've seen a number of Chinese OEMs partner with luxury car companies to provide special edition handsets for fanatics with deep pockets. The $1,295 price tag was already a tough sell without even looking at the phone, but when it finally launched (after delays) the price tag was the least of its worries. The 3D display was borderline gimmicky, and above all else the lackluster camera was the thing that surprised us — not something you’d expect from a camera company.
Related5 most controversial Android apps and games from 2018! We also saw excellent new apps and services like Bouncer and YouTube …
The most far-reaching blunder of the year might go to Huawei, however. It may have released one of the best Android phones ever made, but that didn’t stop the company from catching some negative headlines. As well as its failed launch in the U.S., Huawei has been under scrutiny for some privacy major concerns.
Speaking of privacy concerns, Facebook was one of the worst offenders this year too. While there are plenty of excellent smartphones for audio enthusiasts on the market, smartphone manufacturers are pushing wireless audio, despite our cries for the headphone jack’s return. Wishful thinking aside, let’s dive into what we’re likely to see this year.
Realistic trends
For the record, I’m a realist. While that’s usually code for “I’m a pessimist in denial,” in this instance, I think there are a handful of realistic, positive mobile audio trends on the horizon. True, Bluetooth still can’t outperform wired audio but its convenience is hard to ignore. What’s more, we’ve seen true wireless earbuds improve leaps and bounds in just the past year. Plus, as demonstrated at IFA 2018, renowned audio brands are trying their hands at truly wireless tech, too, which has helped bolster the market.
While it’s entirely possible that the accessibility of the technology will open the floodgates for sub-par earbuds to come, the coin flips both ways. Leveling the playground has allowed other competitors in like JLab and RHA. As manufacturers push their second generation true wireless earbuds to market, we expect to see battery life and connectivity improvements. It’s been just over a year since the dying headphone …
Recent events have compelled some smartphone users to replace their traditional wired earbuds with USB-C earbuds. In a perfect world, the replacement would be seamless, but the lack of universal support for USB-C audio systems is impossible to ignore. Likewise, compatibility issues are headache-inducing.
That said, this year two major companies — OnePlus and Razer — have released their own USB-C headphones, the latter of which performs exceptionally well within its unremarkable category. I hope and anticipate more companies trying their hands at the USB-C market as it remains fairly untapped. If a big brand like Samsung or LG, for instance, produces a knockout pair of earbuds, it can easily corner the market. That said, it seems a stretch since both companies have retained the headphone jack.
Increased aptX support
One of the biggest qualms audiophiles have regarding wireless smartphone audio is, well, streaming quality. A year ago, SBC seemed much more common than aptX. This makes sense since SBC is the lowest common denominator of Bluetooth codecs. Now, however, even ~$30 wireless earbuds can support aptX and aptX LL while operating on Bluetooth 5.0.
As wireless audio becomes ever more salient, we expect to see an increase in aptX-supported headphones and earbuds.
Seeing as mobile audio is a greater concern for general consumers, it seems realistic that more companies will partner with Qualcomm for aptX supported headphones and earbuds. Doing so would also reduce latency when streaming videos, which is important for Netflix and YouTube streamers.
Hail Mary mobile audio wishes
Naturally, there are a few long-shot wishes we audio enthusiasts are clinging onto. While they may not come to fruition this year, it’s okay to be optimistic about years to come.
Headphone jack revival
We desperately hope the headphone jack doesn’t become a luxury feature.
This one’s pretty unlikely seeing as companies have unapologetically let go of the headphone jack like it’s a summer intern at the end of August. We won’t hold our breath for too long though.
For those abstaining from all things Apple, the company’s W1 chip vastly improves wireless audio for iPhone users. Since it’s proprietary hardware, Android users don’t get a bite. Although it’s unlikely an Android W1 chip-equivalent will be announced in the coming year, Samsung and AKG could develop comparable hardware for Android devices, or at least for Samsung’s.
While all this conjecture is fun, it seems guaranteed that true wireless and USB-C technology will only continue to improve. After all, consumers continue to vote with their wallets, casting their ballots for true wireless earbuds in particular. For better or worse, this is the avenue we’re heading down and perhaps it leads to a dead end, or perhaps it leads to an all wireless, high-quality audio future. No doubt some of these lists (and the comments) will mention how lackluster 2018 was for the mobile industry, with incremental updates and little innovation.
To be clear, 2018 hasn’t been bad. We’ve seen incredibly cool devices that slide, pop, and bend. We’ve seen great products made even better with subtle tweaks and refinements. We’ve seen established brands launch new sub-brands to rousing success. We’ve seen brands still establishing themselves achieve things few would have suspected.
There have also been incredible advancements in photography, with multi-lensed smartphones becoming the norm and AI-powered photography tricks empowering even novices to take professional-quality shots.
However, let’s face it: despite all that, 2018 has also been full of yawns.
It's hard to correctly judge the future, but I think Android in 2018 won't be fondly remembered in the Android history books.
Just look at how nearly every manufacturer jumped onto the notched display bandwagon, resulting in a deluge of iPhone X clones. Regardless of how you feel about the notch, it’s hard to deny there were a lot of look-alike devices this year, which makes for a pretty yawn-inducing market.
Editor's PickQ3 2018 smartphone shipments are in: how much longer before Huawei claims top spot?

Huawei and Xiaomi were the big winners in Q3 2018, according to smartphone shipment figures from Counterpoint Research. While the numbers say Samsung is still the number one OEM in terms of market share, a …
We also yawned at the launch of “new” devices that look and feel so similar to the previous device they’re hard to tell apart. A lot of the major smartphone releases were just revamps of previous devices with a few extra bells and whistles added. Just look at the iPhone XS, Google Pixel 3, Samsung Galaxy S9, Samsung Galaxy Note 9, LG V40 ThinQ, and the Sony Xperia XZ3, all of which are minor steps up from the previous models. It would seem appropriate to label 2018 an “S” year.
Even the Google Pixel 3 XL — one of the most talked-about devices of the year — fully leaked months before it launched, and landed to a chorus of yawns.
For these reasons and more, it would be easy for me to write an article where I bash this year’s Android devices. Instead, I’m going to spin things into a more positive take: Android in 2018 will likely be the competent opening act to the true main event: Android in 2019.
Android in 2019

Each major Android OEM has made a lot of promises about what it will have to offer next year. In fact, companies like Samsung and Motorola dedicated large parts of their 2018 device launches hyping up what is coming soon, rather than what they actually had on offer that day.
Let’s check out what a handful of the major OEMs have coming up.
Samsung
In early November, Samsung finally revealed its years-in-the-making foldable phone. The potentially game-changing device opens up into a bendable tablet, allowing users to do all sorts of things currently impossible to do on a standard smartphone. Samsung didn’t fully reveal the device at the event but promised we’d see it in 2019.
The 2019 iteration of the Galaxy S series (likely called the Samsung Galaxy S10) looks to be a complete overhaul from what we’ve seen over the past two years. We expect three (or possibly even four) variants of the S10 instead of the usual two, and we expect them to sport some unique technology like 3D mapping scanners and ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensors. It’s also possible the S10 line could launch with an Infinity-O display, with a small hole cut out for the front-facing camera.
We also expect to see a 5G-enabled smartphone from Sammy in 2019. However, we aren’t sure if it will be part of the S10 line or something all its own.
Regardless, we know Samsung is currently in a “crisis” and working hard behind the scenes to get consumers excited about buying its smartphones again, which is good news for all of us.
OnePlus
OnePlus is revamping its entire smartphone strategy in 2019 by releasing a 5G model that won’t be a successor to the most recent OnePlus 6T. That means there will likely be two smartphone lines running concurrently from OnePlus. This will be the biggest strategy change for the company since it launched the OnePlus X in 2015.
OnePlus also might release a television in 2019, as weird as that sounds. The Chinese company gets bigger, more popular, and more ambitious every year. 2019 will likely be quite exciting for OnePlus.
The major Android OEMs have made some big promises in 2019 which are making us pretty excited.
Xiaomi
Xiaomi is doing some exciting things in 2019, too. It’s already started to trickle into new territories this year, including the U.K. The company is also selling products in the United States, but not smartphones yet. It’s absolutely possible we’ll see Xiaomi smartphones worldwide in 2019, even in the U.S.
The launch of the ultra-cheap Pocophone F1 was one of the surprise hits of 2018, and we fully expect Xiaomi to double down on its new sub-brand in 2019. While the Pocophone F1 was certainly awesome, it wasn’t without flaws, and we hope the Pocophone F2 (or whatever it gets called) will fix some of those issues.
As with most other OEMs on this list, Xiaomi is promising a 5G smartphone in 2019. It’s also promising a foldable phone to compete with Samsung (and possibly LG). Either way, we’d just be happy to finally be able to buy Xiaomi devices in the U.S.
Huawei
Like Samsung, Xiaomi, LG, and others, Huawei has promised a foldable phone in 2019. However, it is one-upping the competition by claiming its foldable device will be 5G capable and possibly even the first one from a major OEM to market.
Huawei will be pushing its very popular sub-brand Honor hard in 2019. In certain areas of the world, Huawei’s biggest competitor is Honor, which is the best kind of problem for any company to have. As such, you can likely expect more powerful mid-range and budget devices for incredibly cheap prices.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing Huawei devices in the United States in 2019. The company could surprise us, but it looks like we’ll still be watching Huawei’s success from afar in the immediate future.
LG
Let’s face it: 2018 hasn’t been the greatest year for LG. After a controversial decision to abandon its original plans for the follow-up to the LG G6, the company launched the LG G7 ThinQ later than planned and to lukewarm sales. The company’s smartphone lineup has gotten incredibly confusing, with the LG V30 quickly followed up by the LG V30S ThinQ and then the LG V35 ThinQ after that, and so on.
However, 2019 could be a new dawn for LG. It’s even apparently hired a “turnaround expert” to solve its mounting financial woes in the mobile sector.
Nothing would please us more than to see LG make a true comeback. LG devices are usually pretty awesome, albeit with a few caveats, but those caveats combined with a usually-very-high asking price make them hard to recommend. Hopefully, LG’s future strategy will take this into account.
Choose your perspective

Many of you reading this might be disappointed with 2018’s phones. You might be holding on to your 2017 device because nothing this year motivated you to run out and replace it. That makes sense.
However, just because 2018 didn’t blow us away, it doesn’t mean we should start with the doomsday talk. We can choose to see 2018 as a stepping stone year, building up the hype for what’s going to really wow us in 2019. Now, Samsung has peeled the curtain back on some AI projects it’ll be revealing at the tech expo.
The Korean company announced that it’ll be showing off eight AI projects from its C-Lab (Creative Lab) initiative. Some of these projects aren’t for mobile, but several are indeed related to smartphones, such as aiMo and MEDEO.
The former application aims to deliver better ASMR sound clips if you’re recording on your smartphone, in conjunction with a cover case (it’s unclear if a special cover is required). Samsung says aiMo delivers better sound directivity, as well as more realistic ASMR sounds, without the need for professional equipment. In fact, the firm says you can get “high quality” results while recording outside too.

Meanwhile, MEDEO is branded as an “instant video making service,” allowing creators to simultaneously shoot and edit live videos. The service uses AI in order to recognize scenes and context, automatically adding video effects, music, and pre-recorded videos to your live stream.
We’ll need to wait and see if this service is a gimmick or genuinely useful, but Samsung says MEDEO is also capable of “one-click video rendering at an expert level that extracts only the core scenes of the saved video.” Hopefully the service isn’t severely limited in terms of the number of video effects and music tracks.
What else is Samsung highlighting?
The third mobile-related project is a hearing assistant called SnailSound. By using an app and earpiece, the service conducts feedback via hearing tests to figure out the user’s desired sounds. From here, it conducts AI-based suppression and amplification in order to boost the desired sounds.
Finally, the last mobile-related AI project by Samsung is a perfume app, called Perfume Blender. It essentially lets users make their own perfume with a “compatible device,” then lets you share the recipe with others via a mobile app. But the app is pretty smart in its own right too.
“When the user takes a photo of their favorite perfumes with the app, it analyzes the common ingredients and recommends fragrance recipes that the user might like,” the Korean company explains. It sounds like you’ll need to buy a potentially expensive machine to actually make your perfume, but it’s an interesting concept anyway.
Editor's PickMachine learning in 2019: Could we see AI chips in $100 smartphones?

Between notches, slider phones, and triple camera setups, 2018 has been a pretty interesting year for smartphones. However, AI development has arguably been one of the most important trends of the year, as Arm, Huawei, …
Another noteworthy project is a virtual advertising service for live-streamers, dubbed Tisplay. This service recognizes a streamer’s clothing, then places ads over them. According to Samsung, the ads look “as if they were actually printed on the clothing.”
Creators can also use the service to add images that are actually relevant to the stream in question. Furthermore, Samsung reckons that this new type of ad is less invasive than mid-video pop-up ads. Then again, who says we won’t see both?
Other noteworthy Samsung AI projects set for CES include an auto-adjusting monitor to help users maintain the correct posture, an “AI desk light,” and an AI-driven news analysis platform. Personally, I’m quite keen to hear results from the ASMR solution, but the SnailSound hearing service has the potential to be a game-changing take on the hearing aid. What would you like to try out? Give us your thoughts in the comments!
NEXT: Honor View 20 hands-on: Are holes better than notches?

source: <a smartphones more or less hit their stride in 2016 and 2017, but Huawei took everyone by surprise with the P20 Pro‘s triple camera combination this year. Combining a 40MP snapper, 8MP 3x telephoto camera, and a 20MP monochrome shooter, the P20 Pro delivered better zoom capabilities than normal digital zoom.
LG’s V40 ThinQ and Huawei’s Mate 20 series then adopted a new triple camera setup, featuring normal, wide, and telephoto cameras. This particular pairing delivers wildly different perspectives, giving us the most flexible smartphone camera setup we’ve seen yet.
Samsung isn’t resting on this trend either, introducing the triple-camera Galaxy A7 2018 earlier this year. This type of camera has only enjoyed more popularity since then, becoming the secondary option of choice for many dual-camera smartphones. In fact, between Samsung, HTC, LG, Xiaomi, and others, it’s tough to find a brand without a secondary telephoto camera in one of its phones.
Google and Huawei both joined the zoom party in earnest this year, with the former adopting a Super Zoom technique for better digital zoom. This technique uses handshake-induced judder to create more detailed zoom shots. It’s far from perfect, we found in our Pixel 3 review, but it’s certainly an improvement over traditional zoom.
Meanwhile, Huawei’s P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro used smart image processing to combine data from the 40MP camera and 8MP 3x telephoto camera. The result is a solution called Hybrid Zoom, delivering better results than standard zoom. The company used Hybrid Zoom on its devices before, but the 5X zoom seen on Huawei’s 2018 flagships is a clear upgrade compared to its prior attempts (owing to data from the telephoto camera).
With Google and Huawei’s efforts with existing telephoto solutions, and it’s tough to find a flagship phone without decent zoom capabilities. The Chinese brand also introduced semantic image segmentation technology earlier this year, essentially to account for multiple objects and subjects in a scene.
Editor's PickDo AI cameras matter? However, the improvements on offer are seldom properly explained, …
However, the biggest name to adopt AI scene detection in 2018 was Samsung, bringing the feature to the Galaxy Note 9 and calling it Scene Optimizer. It works like Huawei’s feature, recognizing 20 scenes and automatically adjusting contrast, brightness, and other factors for a better shot. The Korean firm’s decision to include the function is no small matter, as it traditionally waits a while before adopting new features.
Samsung also confirmed the feature is (or will be) available on the Galaxy A7, Galaxy A9, and Galaxy S9 series. We also saw plenty of other phones focus on selfies in 2018. In fact, a stream of cheaper devices actually had higher resolution cameras this year, which sounds a little counterintuitive at first. After all, conventional wisdom says a lower resolution camera is usually better for low-light snaps (if everything else is identical to the higher resolution camera).
However, Xiaomi, Huawei, Honor, and Oppo offered 16MP, 24MP or 25MP selfie cameras this year. Quite a few brands used pixel-binning to achieve better low-light results, which essentially combines several pixels into one to increase a camera’s low-light sensitivity, at the expense of resolution.
That means a pub selfie with the Xiaomi Redmi S2‘s 16MP snapper actually takes a 4MP shot. The list of the devices and the corresponding dates was shared through the official Samsung Members app.

Samsung’s official Android Pie rollout timeline covers most of the devices which have been released in the past two years. Unfortunately, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7+ didn’t make the cut, but that’s because both those devices have officially received two major updates already. The Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+ and Note8 will be getting their respective updates in March with mid-range devices scheduled to be updated to Android Pie all the way through October of 2019. Keep in mind that devices sold by service providers will likely be updated later than indicated below since service providers do their own testing on the updates before they are released. Sure you can buy Bluetooth headphones, but it’s just another device to keep charged. Once it dies, you’re out of luck. Not to mention paying a premium for wireless and having to deal with with limited battery life, extra weight, and the worse audio quality of Bluetooth.
Adapters are no better, since they can easily be lost and even hard to replace. Depending on your phone, adapters may or may not work from other companies. You’re best off getting an original adapter. USB-C headphones are a decent alternative (besides not being compatible with other products) but buying all new headphones is a pain in and of itself.
Master & Dynamic is known for making luxury headphones, both wired and wireless, but the company is taking the high road and not forcing you to buy new headphones. Instead, M&D now sells new cables under the Digital Accessories name. The duo has a 3.5mm jack on one end that plugs into your Master & Dynamic headphones, while the other either has a USB Type-C port or a Lightning port. This allows you to adapt your existing headphones for your new phone. And the best part? It’s not limited to Master & Dynamic headphones. This cable will work with any headphones using a standardized jack.

Overview
The USB-C version has a USB-C jack with a built in digital-to-analog converter (DAC). This works the same way as a headphone adapter (at least on devices that do digital signal over USB like Google and Essential, among others).
On the other side of the 1.2m cable is a standard 4 pole 3.5mm jack. This should be compatible with almost all headphones. I had success with M&D products as well as Bang & Olufsen and even a mini-XLR to 3.5mm adapter I use with my AKG K7XX headphones. However, this cable didn’t work with the V-MODA Crossfade M-100. Only one channel played, meaning V-MODA uses a non-standard jack. A V-MODA rep just cited a lack of compatibility with some cables.

In the middle are two pieces. Every material on its headphones is exquisite, with copious use of aluminum, stainless steel, cowhide, and lambskin. This cable is no different, though it’s not quite as nice as the basic 3.5mm cables.
The connectors are both slim and made out of metal with solid rubber strain relief. They look and feel great. The mic module is also encased in metal. The remote however is plastic, though it feels great and has no seams running alongside it. It’s one single tube of plastic, adding to the solid feel.
The braiding itself is ridiculously smooth, unlike most braided cables. It’s soft and very fine. How it holds up in the long term is hard to say but it hasn’t shown appreciable wear while I have used it.
Sound quality
Being a digital cable, it bypasses the built in DAC and does its own audio processing right inside the cable. The sound quality is dependent on the cable, not due to the copper used inside, but the way the chip does the processing.
Compared to the built in headphone jack on the Honor 10, this cable sounds significantly better with headphones like the B&O Play H7. The highs are slightly clearer, the bass is substantially sharper and more accurate, and you can definitely tell the difference. Of course you won’t be using this cable with a device that has a headphone jack, but it was a great chance to compare it to the DAC Honor uses with its popular Kirin 970 processor.
It can also power bigger, more power hungry headphones like the AKG K7XX. Most phones with headphone jacks struggle to provide enough power to get good sound quality (the headphones usually just sound lackluster) but this cable provided enough juice for better bass response and better overall sound. It’s not ideal for such headphones, but it’s an improvement over most phones.
It won’t replace a dedicated DAC like the Dragonfly, and it won’t be driving high impedance headphones at all, but it’s definitely up to the task of most consumer headphones like the 62 ohm AKG K7XX. If you’re a casual listener on the go but you enjoy nice headphones, this cable is a no brainer.
Conclusion

This headphone cable sounds great, feels great, and achieves an important purpose. Many of us no longer have headphone jacks, but we can now use our favorite headphones without worrying about adapters to lose or cheap cables breaking.
Above all, I respect Master & Dynamic for releasing a product that will keep its customers happy and in the modern age with existing products. This isn’t the first time this has happened either. The MW50+ were announced with both on-ear and over-ear cups included in the box, but the over-ear cups could be bought separately and used with the old MW50. These two moves are consumer-friendly and that should be recognized.
This isn’t a cheap cable. But the quality of the cable and its utility are easily worth it, especially looking at how poorly reviewed most aftermarket USB-C headphone adapters are. Many of them fail to work properly, so buying a proper cable is important. And at $49, it’s actually less than half the price of the new V-MODA SpeakEasy DAC/AMP Lightning cable (which unfortunately doesn’t come in a USB-C variant). You can pick this Digital Accessories cable up in either black or silver, and if you’re on the Apple side of things, a Lightning version is available for $69.

Master & Dynamic USB-C to 3.5mm Audio Cable Rating: star_fullstar_fullstar_fullstar_fullstar_50 (4.5 / 5)

The Good

Relatively affordable
Improves audio quality
Reuse your favorite headphones

The Bad

Compatibility issues

The Bottom Line
Want to use your older headphones with an aux jack on them? The phones has been regarded as having one of the best camera sensors of the year, but DxOMark’s final rating of 101 places it behind the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, HTC U12+, iPhone XS and a few others.

To be fair, the Pixel 3 phones matched the 101 score which was handed out to the iPhone XR. This means that Google and Apple’s phones share the crown for best cameras on a single-sensor smartphone. While the Pixel 3 and iPhone XR share the same score, the rating system doesn’t take into consideration the front-facing cameras of the two devices. This will require new manufacturing techniques and new facilities and machinery to build them.

TSMC has already announced plans to bring its 5nm production facility online by late 2019 or early 2020, but the company has just revealed that its 3nm production line which is expected to cost $19 billion has just passed its environmental assessment and is scheduled to be operational sometime in 2022. TSMC may not be a name you recognize, but you’re likely familiar with their works since they are the ones who build the chips for Qualcomm, NVidia, AMP, MediaTek and dozens of other “chips makers.”

The announcement comes as a surprise since TSMC has been quiet on the subject of 3nm chips for a long time. According to an internal report, the company didn’t want to show its hand, giving it a potential lead over Samsung and Huawei’s chip-making businesses.

With 2019 right around the corner, 2022 will be here sooner than you think. Just to give you an idea of how far we’ve come over the past few years, 2012 was the year that the Nvidia Tegra 3 was the most sought-after chip. The chip was built on the 40nm process with 4 main cores and a 5th battery-saver core. By the time 2022 rolls around, the 3nm process will allow TSMC to cram in nearly 1,000% more semiconductors on the same size chip.

It may be hard to get excited about a 3nm SoC that you won’t be able to use for another 3-4 years, but the process takes a lot of time. TSMC is planning to start construction of the 3nm chip facility in 2020 with the installation of the equipment to build the chips scheduled for 2021. Once that’s done, it’ll be about a year before the manufacturing process is completed, tested and refined before the fir commercial chips from Qualcomm, MediaTek and others start rolling off the line.

The 7nm chips we have now are already extremely powerful and efficient. What new and amazing features are you hoping to see on smartphones and other gadgets running 3nm chips in 2022?

Source: GizChina

source: https://phandroid.com/2018/12/20/first-3nm-chips-to-hit-the-market-sooner-than-you-think/
date: Thu, 20 Dec 2018 18:50:38 +0000
{"$t":"Rahul
$t":"https://www.blogger.com/profile/13622007197946421503
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"thr$total":{"$t":"0
$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570058735327109630.post-1456732721766729229
$t":"2018-12-27T11:53:00.003+05:30
$t":"2018-12-27T11:53:04.654+05:30
text","$t":"Google Assistant ‘Home Alone Again’ commercial with Macaulay Culkin is pure genius
html","$t":"

In a moment fans have waited on for almost 30 years, Macaulay Culkin has recreated some of Home Alone’s most famous scenes. The 38-year-old actor returns in a new commercial as Kevin McCallister – and while the feisty eight-year-old is now fully grown, he’s up to the same tricks previously displayed in the beloved 1990 Christmas classic.

The ad, which advertises Google Assistant and its Google Home products, begins with an establishing shot of the sprawling McCallister house, which in Home Alone becomes the site of Kevin’s ingenious booby traps as he defends it against a pair of robbers.

In just one minute, the video manages to tick several major Home Alone boxes.

“Grown up” Kevin has the house all to himself – which is slightly less of an issue than it was in the original film – and relishes in some alone time.

He runs out of aftershave, echoing the famous scene in which Kevin shaves his face then applies some of the product onto his cheeks, before screaming when he realises it burns his delicate skin. This time around, Kevin simply asks his home assistant to remind him to add aftershave to his shopping list.

Kevin then jumps on his bed, a simple pleasure he enjoys in the 1990 comedy after realising his family is gone.

He watches his favourite movie, the fictional Angels with Filthy Souls, and as he does in one of the most iconic sequences of Home Alone, uses some of the film’s dialogue to talk to a pizza delivery man.

All in all this is the perfect Christmas advert both heartwarming and painfully 2.0 – I won’t spoil all the great moments though. Palm, Nokia, RIM, Motorola, HTC and others all enjoyed tremendous success, followed by a dramatic fall. The interesting thing is that the stories behind the successes and failures of these companies are all different. They bet on the wrong platform, moved too slowly, got lost in the shuffle or simply lost their identity.

But since each company faced unique difficulties, it’s been hard for other companies to learn from their mistakes. While it’s easy to spot a company that’s a few years into a decline, it’s harder to predict which company will be the next to fall from grace. Because of that, you likely wouldn’t believe us if we told you that #2 smartphone maker on the globe will be the one facing an uncertain future.

Huawei surpassed Apple on the charts back in 2017, moving from being the #3 smartphone maker to the #2 spot, positioning itself nicely behind Samsung. The company is expected to ship more than 200 million devices in 2018, up from 153 million units in 2017. Huawei has been on an unprecedented growth spurt, overtaking its competitors one by one by delivering cutting-edge smartphone like the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and budget-friendly devices with competitive specs with its Honor brand.

The most surprising aspect of Huawie’s growth has been that it’s managed to capture 15% of the global smartphone market share without breaking into the North American market. That point was to be Huawei’s main focus for 2018, but it’s also where things started to go wrong as well.

Back in January of this year, Huawei’s CES press conference was where the company was planning to announce its official entry into the US market. Huawei had worked out deals to bring the Huawei Mate 10 Pro to AT&T and Verizon, putting its best phone on thousands of stores across the US. But those deals fell through at the last minute. According to the rumors, AT&T and Verizon backed out at the last minute due to pressure from the US Senate and House committees which insisted that Huawei would be “a security threat” if it managed to secure a firm foothold in the US market.

Huawei pushed forward with the Mate 10 Pro announcement, choosing to sell the device unlocked through Best Buy and its own website. In February, the US’ offensive went one step further with the heads of multiple US intelligence agencies warning Congress about the threat posed by Huawei’s close ties with the Chinese government.

“We’re deeply concerned about the risks of allowing any company or entity that is beholden to foreign governments that don’t share our values to gain positions of power inside our telecommunications networks,”

While no specific threats of espionage were shared, the US government’s anti-Huawei stance was enough for Best Buy to rethink it’s relationship with Huawei, announcing that it would phase out sales of unlocked Huawei devices.

Since then, the US government has been putting pressure on its allies across the globe to limit their use of Huawei networking equipment. So far, New Zealand, the UK, Canada and Australia appear to have taken a stance against Huawei as well, citing security concerns with Huawei’s equipment.

Just this week, we learned that the Sprint and T-Mobile merger in the US was given a security approval based on the agreement from Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile’s parent company) and SoftBank Group (Sprint’s parent company) to not use Huawei network equipment to build out their 5G networks. This is a huge blow for Hauwei as SoftBank Group and Deutsche Telekom operate the largest networks in Japan and Germany.

On top of that, Huawei CFO Wanzhou Meng was arrested in Vancouver on December 1st. The arrest is related to Huawei’s supposed violation of international sanctions on Iran. While the exact details of the violation are still being kept under wraps, the US is hoping to have Meng extradited to the US to face trial. Making matters worse, Wanzhou Meng also serves as vice-chair of Huawei’s board and is the daughter of the company’s founder.

So where does all this leave Huawei?

While Huawei’s smartphone business is bigger than ever, its network infrastructure business will be facing tough times in 2019 and beyond. For those who don’t know, Huawei’s network equipment business if far bigger and dramatically more lucrative for Huawei than its smartphone business. It’s also the reason why the company’s smartphones have become so popular across Asia and Europe.

Huawei has used sales of its network equipment to service providers across the globe as a bargaining chip to get them to also sell its smartphones to their customers. That’s one of the reasons why Huawei’s smartphones hadn’t yet established a foothold in the US. Huawei has been banned from bidding on US network builds in the US since 2011, essentially freezing out any relationships between Huawei and US service providers.

If more countries ban Hauwei equipment from their 5G network build outs, the relationship that Huawei has with service provider around the globe will suffer. There’s a very good chance that customers will start seeing fewer Hauwei devices in carrier shops in Europe, forcing the company to retreat to Asia and more friendly markets. This would inevitably lead to a dramatic decline in the sales of Huawei smartphones, resulting in a drop in market share.

The good news is that none of this is set in stone. Huawei is currently trying to work with the UK to address the security concerns they have. The company could also make significant changes to distance itself from the Chinese government, adding independent oversight of certain portions of its business. At this point, Huawei’s fate is still in its own hands. They can choose to play defense and try to fend off the attacks on its businesses or go on the offensive and present a plan which will change the narrative in 2019.

source: https://phandroid.com/2018/12/19/2019-could-be-the-beginning-of-the-end-for-huawei/
date: Wed, 19 Dec 2018 17:58:59 +0000
{"$t":"Rahul
$t":"https://www.blogger.com/profile/13622007197946421503
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"thr$total":{"$t":"0
$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570058735327109630.post-1068265969578853780
$t":"2018-12-27T11:52:00.005+05:30
$t":"2018-12-27T11:52:59.497+05:30
text","$t":"HTC confirms no new flagship smartphone in the spring
html","$t":"

A month ago we reported that HTC would not be releasing an HTC U13 in the spring of 2019. While the company is still planning to release at least one high-end smartphone in 2019, HTC Taiwan president Darren Chen has confirmed that the company’s roadmap does not feature a flagship smartphone for the spring.

Instead, HTC plans to extend the life cycle of the HTC U12+ which was released in May of this year. Chen did not elaborate on HTC’s plans for a flagship device later in 2019, but our source did previously share that “something else” will be coming from HTC, likely during the second half of the year.

Chen revealed that HTC’s efforts for 2019 would be centered around mid-range and high-end devices for 2019, in an effort to reboot smartphone sales and increase revenue for the company. It’s no secret that HTC isn’t doing well. 2018 will be the worst year on record for the company with revenue taking a 50-60% nosedive when compared to 2017.

HTC will be relying on new smartphones like the HTC Desire 12s and the HTC U12 Life to move the needle a little. These new devices don’t offer much for those who have been HTC fans for the past decade, but they should be able to hold HTC over and pull in more revenue as HTC works on more profitable products to bring to market.

Source: DigiTimes

source: https://phandroid.com/2018/12/18/htc-confirms-no-new-flagship-smartphone-in-the-spring/
date: Wed, 19 Dec 2018 00:15:46 +0000
{"$t":"Rahul
$t":"https://www.blogger.com/profile/13622007197946421503
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"thr$total":{"$t":"0
$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570058735327109630.post-5114546399314898442
$t":"2018-12-27T11:52:00.003+05:30
$t":"2018-12-27T11:52:56.473+05:30
text","$t":"AT&T’s 5G network goes live in 12 markets this week
html","$t":"

The long-awaited launch of AT&T’s 5G network has officially arrived! The 12 launch markets include Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Louisville, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Raleigh, San Antonio and Waco.

But before you get too excited, AT&T’s 5G launch doesn’t mean you’ll be able to go out and buy a 5G smartphone and take advantage of the improved speeds anytime soon.

The first 5G device AT&T will be making available is the NETGEAR Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot which will deliver 5G speeds over AT&T’s mmWave spectrum and will fall back onto LTE when it’s not able to connect to 5G. The NETGEAR Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot will cost $499 with a $70/month plan which will deliver a mere 15GB of data. It will not be available to everyday consumers until spring of 2019, but AT&T plans to give select businesses and individuals access to it before then.

“As the ecosystem evolves, this technology will ultimately change the way we live and conduct business,” said Mo Katibeh, chief marketing officer, AT&T Business. “We expect that our initial adopters will be innovative, growing businesses. They’re the starting point for what we think will be a technology revolution like we’ve never seen before.”

AT&T’s 5G network will expand to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose during the first half of 2018. The company hasn’t announced the full number of markets it will be rolling out 5G service to in 2019, but expect to see quite a few more cities added to the list.

Are you ready to jump onto the 5G bandwagon in 2019?

Source: PR Newswire

source: https://phandroid.com/2018/12/18/atts-5g-network-goes-live-in-12-markets-this-week/
date: Tue, 18 Dec 2018 20:15:00 +0000
{"$t":"Rahul
$t":"https://www.blogger.com/profile/13622007197946421503
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"thr$total":{"$t":"0
$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570058735327109630.post-5564203758622919195
$t":"2018-12-27T11:52:00.001+05:30
$t":"2018-12-27T11:52:53.949+05:30
text","$t":"World’s first SD855 smartphone benchmarks kill the competition
html","$t":"

When Qualcomm
announced the new Snapdragon 855 last month, they promised that the new 7nm
chip would be significantly more powerful than the Snapdragon 845 and would
also give Huawei’s Kirin 980 and Apple A12 a run for their money. While it’s
easy to get excited about claims like that, we’ve been waiting for some
real-world numbers to back them up.

Thanks to today’s unveiling of the Lenovo Z5 Pro GT which is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC, we can now get a better look at howmuch more powerful Qualcomm’s new chip actually is.

During the Z Pro GT’s unveiling, Lenovo shared some numbers, revealing that the phone managed to score a mind-boggling 368,480 points onAntutu. When compared to the Antutu benchmark numbers of the iPhone XS, the Lenovo Z Pro GT has a 3-5% performance advantage. But that gap grows to 20% when matched up against devices running the Kirin 980 and there’s an astounding 25% gap when you look at devices running the Snapdragon 845.

To be fair, the Lenovo Z5 Pro GT’s Antutu benchmark numbers area little skewed since the benchmarked device was equipped with 12GB of RAM. By removing the RAM “advantage” that the phone has over its competitors, Antutubelieves that the phone would still manage a score in the 360,000 point range. Even with this drop, the Lenovo Z5 Pro GT is still the most powerful smartphone to be benchmarked by Antutu and should give us a good baseline for how other Android smartphones running the Snapdragon 855 should perform. For those who don’t know, a leaked Antutu benchmark score for the upcoming Samsung GalaxyS10 surfaced recently with a score of 343,051. Since the device isn’t expected to make its debut for at least two more months, those scores couldeasily reach 360,000 as the software is finalized and performance optimizationsare made.

While few of you will likely be buying the new Lenovo Z5 ProGT, the performance numbers we’re seeing from the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 lookpromising. The new chipset will deliver incredibly powerful smartphones in 2019 and the new 7nm manufacturing process will also give those devices improved battery life.

What’s your take on the performance of the new Snapdragon
855? Do you think it’ll be worth upgrading from a high-end 2018 smartphone to
one running a SD855 in 2019?
