Before I give my final thoughts on the supplement, here's some basic information about how we used it. We never used a full two scoops a day, as recommended. The most we ever managed was about 1 1/2 scoops a day. For the first two months or so I was pretty consistent about getting that amount into Ava on a daily basis. After that we used the product fairly sporadically.

When we first started using the product I thought I saw an improvement in Ava's speech. I thought she was talking more often in longer utterances. Looking back, I'd say that the improvement was likely due to a developmental spurt or due to the speech therapy services she was receiving.

When we went on a family visit for about a week and Ava did not take the supplement I noticed no change in her speech and language. After that, our use of NutriiVeda became more sporadic and I didn't put the same effort into getting it into her daily.

Now, Ava also has some suspected sensory issues. We haven't had our OT eval yet. One of the ways this effects her is to make her an extremely picky eater. I like the nutritional profile of the NutriiVeda as a meal replacement. It is high in protein and low in sugar. Several times a week I mix it into some yogurt and I feel good about giving it to her for purely nutritional reasons.

We are still buying the product. The company will let you call and delay the autoship for a month. We do that every other month. Many parents have reported that it works for their child and you can't know if it will help you unless you try it. Although interesting, the added Omegas are not super significant for me because they come from plant sources rather than fish sources making them less appropriate as a supplement for apraxia. Also the dosage is less than generally recommended as a therapeutic dose.

I tried it myself. I do believe that the new NutriiVeda Achieve formulation results in a creamier "shake" (mixed with skim milk) than the original formula. I also think that the new formulation is a little more subtle than the old one. To be honest, I personally disliked the old one. I'm not in love with the new one, but I dislike it less. I found the old one difficult to mix into milk without ending up with lots of big clumps. The new one has the same problem.

The original NutriiVeda mixed beautifully into yogurt. It almost disappeared in terms of texture. If anything, it seemed to make the yogurt a little bit thinner. The new NutriiVeda Achieve seems to mix into the yogurt and give it a creamier, thicker, fluffier texture a little like a mousse.

When I gave it to the kids (occasionally I feed the mix to both kids - it's just simpler that way) Michael immediately noticed the change. He said, "This is a new yogurt. It tastes different. It tastes salty." Now, yes, the new NutriiVeda Achieve does have sodium while the old one did not, but you're also taking the word of a 3 1/2 year old that it tastes salty. I'm not sure he uses the term accurately. That might just be the only word he knows to describe a change in taste. On the other hand, they added sodium and removed over half the sugar content. It may actually taste saltier to him.

He continued to comment on the change as he consumed the bowl. He ate it, but I'm not sure he liked it. Ava ate hers and did not comment on the difference. We've only had one serving so far. I'll let you know if the difference in taste (or texture?) becomes a problem.

Bottom Line The new NutriiVeda Achieve is significantly different in taste and texture from the old NutriiVeda formula. I like the concept of increased fiber and reduced sugar, but I also need Ava to eat it. We'll see if she continues to eat the new formula. I'm not super fond of the increase in sodium. My opinion of the added Omega 3 and Omega 6 from plant sources is neutral.
{"$t":"Dala
$t":"https://www.blogger.com/profile/09390391982768152147
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"media$thumbnail":{"xmlns$media":"http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5GIREitWSGo/Tdgxk5pkVgI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/lZfyZ0MupXI/s72-c/NutriiVeda%2Bvs%2BNutriiVeda%2BAchieve%2BComparison%2BChart.jpg
72
72"},"thr$total":{"$t":"1
$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2522593221428423055.post-2411253068484111238
$t":"2011-05-19T05:28:00.000-05:00
$t":"2011-05-19T05:28:00.242-05:00
"$t":"Another Perspective (On NutriiVeda) Is Always Valuable
html","$t":"We've been trying NutriiVeda with Ava. My opinion is that I am seeing a difference in her speech. She is talking a lot more. She talks all the time. She's also trying to sing. She's never really done that before. Before, she would sing a single word if I paused while singing a song, but now she is trying to sing herself. She's trying to follow along with all the words. She has even tried to sing a song entirely by herself once or twice. Another thing Ava is doing that is new is self-correcting. As she was talking to herself, I heard the word "water" which she said as "wa wa." A moment later I heard her pause and correct it to "wa ter." I was amazed. She corrected the word entirely on her own showing that she's listening to her own speech more and can tell when she says a word correctly and when she doesn't.

None of this is proof of course. Perhaps she would have made all this progress without the NutriiVeda. However, until someone conducts a rigorous scientific study, we can't know for sure. I found it to be cheaper there than on other sites where it was being sold as a weight-loss product. When I read my confirmation email I was surprised to learn that when I made my purchase I had actually signed up for a monthly automatic shipment program. That was not clear to me during the checkout process. However, the number to call and cancel was clearly listed in the confirmation email and their customer service was excellent when I called.

The product was well packaged in an attractive box and arrived promptly. The individual containers are attractive and the product appeared to be in good condition. I’m using the product with my two year old daughter who has suspected Childhood Apraxia of Speech. I found that if I mix about half to 2/3 scoop (vanilla flavor) in with 4 ounces of yogurt, my daughter will eat it with no problem. Depending on how often she eats yogurt in a day she’ll get anywhere from half a scoop of NutriiVeda a day to two scoops per day. We’ve been using the product for about a week. At only one week, I cannot claim that I see clear signs of improvement in her speech that I definitely attribute to use of the NutriiVeda product. However, we haven’t been using it very long. I will update in the future. The product has a nice side benefit of adding a nutritional boost to the diet of a very picky two year old, so in that way it is a win either way.

Two-week Update: About two weeks into using NutriiVeda (average of one scoop daily) I feel like I am seeing definite improvement. We are hearing a lot more talking. She's even attempting to sing. She is listening to her own speech and self-correcting which we had never seen her do before. Could it be coincidence? Of course. Until someone completes a double-blind scientific study we won't have hard evidence. For now all we have is parent report. I'm reporting that I feel like I'm seeing improvements that I wasn't seeing before starting to give her NutriiVeda.

Six-week Update: At about six weeks after starting to supplement Ava with NutriiVeda we are giving her about 1.5 scoops a day on average. I believe that she is speaking much more often, her sentences are longer, and she is trying to string several sentences together to tell a single story. She has also learned a new sound (/f/) and some other new sounds are starting to emerge. She is occasionally putting a consonant at the end of some of her words (the /p/ at the end of "up" for example). All of this is new. As before, there is certainly no proof that these improvements are due to the NutriiVeda and wouldn't be happening anyway, but the coincidence is interesting and I'm not complaining. We will be continuing to use NutriiVeda in our household.

Are there other supplements that might help with Childhood Apraxia of Speech?
There is some evidence that supplementation with Omega-3 fatty acids can be helpful for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech.
