To finish it off, I added a faux fur pom pom that had been in my stash for awhile just waiting for the perfect hat.

I'm hoping these hats will help keep me a bit warmer while exploring England. The Messy Bun Hat, a.k.a. The Ponytail Beanie, a.k.a. The Mom Bun Hat, a.k.a.... well, I think that's it. Anyway, I felt like I saw those hats all over the web in December. I even got a special request to make one for Christmas. So I looked at a couple free patterns out there and then ended up making my own version.

This hat's starting row is crocheted around an elastic hair band. I like that the hair band helps to stretch the beanie to fit over the bun without having to have a huge gap. The hat is worked up with bulky yarn so it's a fairly quick project. I also decided to publish this pattern because it gave me an excuse to make my own! I think these are perfect for bad/lazy/dirty hair days in the winter. It also perfect for preventing hat head. You can just put your hair up in a loose bun, put on the hat, and stay warm outside. Then when you're inside, you can just take off the hat and undo the bun and you have lots of volume in your hair. I'm still working on perfecting my messy bun, though, to give the hat maximum hair pompom effect.

This hat uses a special stitch that I first used when making the
Triple Luxe Cowl from All About Ami. I gathered all the scraps I had of it and started crocheting. It makes me a bit anxious to use scraps for a project because I don't know if it will be enough. Lo and behold, I ran out of yarn two rows short (one hdc row and the finishing slip stitch). I could have stopped right there, but I didn't want it to be too snug, especially since I had been itching to add a pom pom to something. I dug through my yarn stash and found some Vanna's Choice in Charcoal Grey. It was very similar to the dark gray of the Lion's Pride Woolspun, but it was a lighter weight. I decided to hold it double to finish the hat. I also ended up adding an extra row of hdc to create some slouchiness.

I am a bit ashamed to say my yarn stash has grown embarrassingly (or enviously?) large. So I was able to find scraps of ivory, dark grey, and navy blue worsted weight yarn to use to make the pom pom. I made a 5" pom pom using the cardboard circle technique explained here. I usually just use my fingers to make pom poms, but I wanted this one to be oversized. I have never worked with bulky yarn before and I usually buy acrylic or cotton yarn, but I was drawn to this yarn. I love the look and feel of it. The yarn is 20% wool and 80% acrylic, so it rather soft and not itchy like a lot of wool yarn can be. It takes roughly 1 skein of yarn per hat. So if you're going to use two colors, you can make 2 striped hats with those two colors. The finished hat is fairly thick, so it will be nice and warm for the wintertime.

This hat is worked up in the round because I strongly dislike visible seams in crochet hats. Working in the round, unfortunately, makes the stripes meet up a bit off kilter. If that bugs you, I found a great tutorial for making seamless crochet stripes in the round from KT and the Squid.

For these hats, I purchased Woolspun yarn in Navy Heather, Oxford Grey, Charcoal, Black, and Fisherman (a cream color). The navy heather is my favorite, so I used 2 skeins of it. It is a nice navy color with bits of gray threads visible. I will give you the basic hat pattern first, then the break down of how I did the different stripe patterns. A word of warning, the darker colors crocheted up tighter than the lighter colors. So keep this in mind if making a hat for someone with a larger head.

MATERIALS NEEDED

Lion Brand Woolspun Yarn

K hook (6.5 mm)

CROCHET TERMINOLOGY (US terms)

ch = chain

hdc = half double crochet

HAT PATTERN (crocheted in the round)

Row 1: 9 hdc in magic circle (9)

Row 2: 2 hdc in each stitch across (18)

Row 3: hdc in first stitch, 2 hdc in next stitch; repeat around (27)

Row 4: hdc in next 2 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch; repeat around (36)

Row 5: hdc in next 3 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch; repeat around (45)

Row 6: hdc in next 4 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch; repeat around (54)

Row 7-18: hdc around (54)

Row 19: Slip stitch loosely (or use an L hook) around (54)

Finish off.
