used properly, and positioned properly (front half of the barrel shroud), they give you the control to transition between targets much more quickly, though the Magpul AFG is actually better, since that's how you should be holding the gun in the first place (unless you're shooting off-hand at something over 200 yards off). you can just wrap your hand around the barrel shroud with your thumb forward, but there lies future elbow tendonitus.

There's a reason all the top people in 3-gun use them. When there's money to be won, people aren't going to weigh down a rifle with something if it doesn't actually help them perform better.
