J: apparently there's a business in reusing Magsafe connectors/cables from dead chargers, so your knockoff plug could be a recycled genuine plug. Another possibility is counterfeit DS2413 chips - I would not be surprised if someone makes them. A third possibility is replacing the DS2413 with a generic microcontroller chip programmed to act like a DS2413.
