The blue Geo Metro was actually built for improved fuel economy. It managed 75mpg with the body mods and a few mechanical changes like a very tall final drive. For comparison, my daily driven mildly modified Metro (with a mildly taller than stock final drive ratio) can only hit 50-55 mpg on the highway and 40-45mpg in town. While this may not seem impressive compared to some hybrids, it is important to note that the Metro is not a hybrid car. It only has a 55hp 3 cylinder engine, but weighs less than 1700lbs.
As for the car identified as a Beetle, it appears that the center section is the body from a Messerschmidt micro car of the 1950's.
