Back in the Cold War days, any eastern bloc group that got to tour the free world was assigned a “Political Officer” to accompany them at all times, monitor their political orthodoxy, and thwart defections. The Political Officer reported directly to the Party.
It might be proper to start referring to Chipman as the Gifford group’s Political Officer.
