Glad to hear that there were witnesses. I paused briefly while writing this up last night for my blog and then decided to post it and keep an eye out for any signs of falsehood.

This is called disparity of force folks. If even 10 people attack someone without provocation, it is reasonable to believe that the victim will end up in the hospital (especially if the victim is down and being "stomped"), usually satisfying the "serious bodily injury" clause many states have to authorize the use of deadly force.
