Hampton University is surrounded by the best closed-down transmission shops and gas stations, dive bars and strip joints an ill-run city can offer. Virginia Tech has thriving restaurants, hotels, malls and cinemas. The Shadow of Death feels equally at home either place. I don't think he reads student manuals.
When I was in college, we never heard of campus shootings, and I carried every day, as did my friends. We were never patted down or strip-searched for drugs or weapons. There were no metal detectors. The Powers trusted us. We were trustworthy. People tend to behave the way the feel they are expected to behave. Ahem.
